Sebastian Rowlands

Sebastian Rowlands (they/them) is a transgender, interdisciplinary artist based in Brighton. A 2026 Fine Art BA graduate at the Art Academy, they had their first solo show ‘AH: After Hysterectomy’ in 2025. They have exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (2025), winning the Student Prize, and Royal Society of British Artists (2025), alongside numerous queer shows including Swamp Witches (2025), Textile Junction (2024), the Anti-Misogyny Club (2024), STOGGAF Queer Art Collective (2024) and the Socially Engaged Art Salon (2024). They are an advisory group member to Charleston and run a community quilting project exploring queer neurodiversity in Brighton.

Their practice plays with nuances of the non-binary experience as autobiographical and critically questions political and cultural framings of gender non-conforming queerness. Working with large-scale sculptural and embroidered textiles, wood carving, metal casting, ceramics, and interactive installations blending sound, smell, and taste, they deploy queer tactics of abstraction and non-linearity to refuse access to the trans body. They repeatedly use haptic materials and repetitive craft process to communicate the particular synaesthesia and identity-blending of non-binary, neurodiverse gender.
